Genga

The first moment a story takes shape.
作品の「最初の一瞬」。
The original production artwork from Japan’s hand-painted animation era.

From the 1960s to the 1990s,
animation in Japan was built through a precise, collaborative workflow:

genga to define the pose and emotion,
cel layers to carry the color and final expression,
and handwritten notes on the reverse side to guide timing, movement, and camera work.

What survives today are one-of-one production artifacts,
created for a single frame yet carrying the full intention of the scene or even the story itself.

This collection brings together the elements behind that process—
the genga that set the foundation,
the cel that brought the drawing to life,
and the markings, shadows, and studio notes that reveal how the frame was constructed.
